Keep Your Los Angeles Kids Fit

January 24th, 2012 by dmccalla

Keep Your Los Angeles Kids Fit An important element in any CA child’s health is physical activity. Most young Irvine children are busy exploring their world and don’t need any encouragement to run, skip, or jump. But spontaneous activities like these may decline during the tween years when most Orange County children begin spending more time on indoor activities like TV watching, video game playing, and texting.

As Los Angeles parents we need to be more proactive during these years to make sure our kids are physically fit. Helping them choose a popular Los Angeles sport such as soccer, baseball, or skiing is an excellent way to encourage activity.

Provide active toys such as jump ropes, hula hoops, bikes, and roller blades and limit sedentary activities like movie watching.

Model the physically active behavior you want your Irvine child to have. Take walks with your kids. Take advantage of Los Angeles recreational options. Go snow boarding, swimming, or hiking with them to show them that being active and fit is important to you.

Active Orange County kids need healthy between-meal snacks such as dried fruit, nuts, string cheese, and protein bars. As a child’s health advocate in CA, I would love to share one of my favorite super-nutritious snacks with you. Please contact me today!

AAP Immunization Information For Orange County Parents

January 19th, 2012 by dmccalla

AAP Immunization Information For Orange County Parents In the past century, the rates of many serious diseases in the United States have significantly declined, in some cases, they have been virtually eradicated.

Many Orange County people have never met a person with measles, polio, small pox, rubella, tetanus, or diphtheria; though these diseases killed thousands of CA children in past generations.

One of the main reasons many dangerous communicable childhood diseases have been minimized in our area is due to Los Angeles children’s immunizations. The increase in immunization use has gone a long way to improve health in our CA communities.

Recently, I have noticed that many Orange County parents are questioning the children’s immunization schedule. I came across an informative American Academy of Pediatrics FAQ sheet that addresses most of the common concerns.

The AAP document entitled ‘The Vaccine Schedule, Why Is It Like That?,’ can be downloaded at http://www.aap.org/healthtopics/immunizations.cfm

I certainly learned a lot after reading the FAQ sheet and thought I would tell you about it here in my Orange County children’s health blog.

I think it is important for all Orange County parents like myself to be reminded of the scientific evidence that supports the use of the immunization schedule.

I am Orange County children’s health advocate Diana McCalla. Call me at (888) 813-2632 to learn about my favorite healthy snack for CA kids.

Is My CA Baby Ready For Solids?

January 18th, 2012 by dmccalla

Is My CA Baby Ready For Solids?

Although Orange County pediatricians generally recommend starting infants on solid foods when they are around six months of age, there are important developmental milestones that must be reached before your baby can take this step.

Even if an infant’s digestive system is ready for solid food, the baby must be able to safely swallow it. A baby should be able to sit with assistance but hold his or head up on their own. Without head and neck control, eating solids is difficult and dangerous. Many Orange County pediatricians also advise parents to wait until an infant shows interest in what other family members are eating.

If you are unsure if your infant is ready for solid food, check with your Orange County pediatrician. Remember that for the first year your baby’s nutrition will still come primarily from breast milk or formula.

Irvine Teens At Risk For Eating Disorders

Irvine Teens At Risk For Eating Disorders

Hello! Welcome to the Irvine children’s health blog. I am entrepreneur Diana McCalla. At this site, I publish information on nutrition and health issues that affect Irvine children and families. My goal is to improve the state of children’s health in the Los Angeles area.

Despite decades of increased awareness in Los Angeles about the dangers of a distorted body image and extreme dieting, eating disorders are still a serious problem.

A recent American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) study revealed disturbing facts about eating disorders among children.1 According to the report, 0.5 percent of teenage girls in the country are estimated to have anorexia. The bulimia rate among adolescent girls is estimated at more than double that at 1 to 2 percent. Though anorexia and bulimia are usually thought of as a problem for adolescents, Irvine parents should be aware that even young Los Angeles children are at risk, as well as males, though the rates are lower.

CA pediatricians can help Irvine parents with children affected by an eating disorder. The AAP recommends a combination approach for the treatment of eating disorders in children. Treatment plans usually include nutritional guidance and psychiatric counseling along with the appropriate medical care.

Helping Los Angeles Kids Cope With Seasonal Allergies

January 10th, 2012 by dmccalla

Helping Los Angeles Kids Cope With Seasonal Allergies

Hello Los Angeles! Welcome to today’s children’s health and nutrition blog. Today, we are discussing seasonal allergies. Many Los Angeles parents wonder if their child’s sneezing and runny nose are temporary symptoms of a cold or seasonal allergies. Generally, colds also come with aches and a low fever and last only a week, while allergies can persist for an entire season. Los Angeles doctors are seeing new cases of seasonal allergies among people of all ages, especially adults. Is this an unintended result of more aggressive germ-fighting in childhood?

‘Researchers speculate that thanks to antibacterial soaps, hand sanitizers and other powerful germ-killing products, kids today are less likely to be exposed to the bacteria and viruses that help the immune system shift into gear and prevent them from developing allergies and asthma as they grow up.’1

Regardless of the possibility that allergies may persist into adulthood, there are several steps Los Angeles parents can take to help their child get through the allergy prone months with minimal discomfort:

Replace your filters (AC and furnace) at least every two or three months, and look for MERV ratings of 11 or 12 for maximum efficiency filters. Though it may be difficult during the hot Los Angeles months, remember to keep your windows closed at home and in the car. Check pollen levels online and try to have your child wait until evening to go outdoors when pollen counts are lower.

Have your child shower before going to bed to wash allergen out of his or her hair and skin so it won’t transfer to bedding and increase irritation during the night. You can also use plastic or allergen-proof covers for your child’s mattress, box springs, and pillows for extra protection.

Your Los Angeles doctor can test your child to determine the specific allergens and prescribe safe and effective medications.

The Right Bedtime Snack Can Help Irvine Kids Fall Asleep

The Right Bedtime Snack Can Help Irvine Kids Fall Asleep

Orange County parents know that sleep is important for their child’s health. If your Irvine child has a hard time falling asleep, you may want to try a bedtime snack. Well-chosen evening snacks can help ease the transition to sleep.

Eating too much before bedtime is never a good idea for anyone, but a small snack may be just the ticket to dreamland for little ones in Orange County. Foods containing the amino acid tryptophan are a natural sleep aid, especially if they are coupled with carbohydrates, which help make tryptophan more available to the brain.

Bedtime foods you can purchase at your local Irvine grocer include soy milk, dairy products, nuts, seeds, and legumes, such as lentils or chick peas. These foods coupled with a healthy carbohydrate make the perfect bedtime snack. Your Irvine kiddos will be visiting the sandman before you know it.

Try a glass of soy milk with a few whole grain crackers or string cheese and apple slices. Low-fat cottage cheese with pineapple helps my munchkins fall asleep.

Energy Drinks Pose Health Risks For Los Angeles County Kids

January 5th, 2012 by dmccalla

Energy Drinks Pose Health Risks For Los Angeles County Kids

Hello Los Angeles County! Welcome to my children’s health blog. I am a concerned parent and advocate for improved children’s health in the Los Angeles County area.

Today’s topic is energy drinks. Many Los Angeles County teens are under the false impression that energy drinks like Rock Star and Red Bull are similar to sports drinks such as Gatorade and Powerade.

Energy drinks are completely different from electrolyte replacement drinks and we need to help our children understand the health risks they pose. Energy drinks contain dangerous chemicals that can harm kid’s growing bodies, especially their teeth.

Energy drinks contain citric acid, fruit juices and extracts, sugar, and a dangerous chemical that gives them their bright color. They can damage tooth enamel with prolonged use.

It is important for us Los Angeles County parents to model healthy behavior for our children. If your kids see you guzzle energy drinks, you may want to think about the example you are setting.

I sell child-friendly nutritional products that are enjoyed by healthy Los Angeles County families. To order healthy energy-boosters, visit http://www.cocoa101.com.

Los Angeles Parents: Think Twice Before Buying A Used Car Seat

January 3rd, 2012 by dmccalla

Los Angeles Parents: Think Twice Before Buying A Used Car Seat

In these days of rising prices and shrinking paychecks, Los Angeles parents are trying to save money wherever they can. They shop sales for food, clothes, school supplies, and other necessities.

Many Los Angeles thrift stores have seen their business increase in the past few years as parents have discovered how much money they can save by buying used items. Perfectly good toys, clothes, books, sports gear, and children’s furniture can be purchased for a fraction of retail price at Los Angeles thrift stores.

One place Los Angeles parents should not scrimp, however, is on their child’s car seat. If you are considering buying a used child safety seat, make sure it comes with the user’s manual, the model number, and date of manufacture. You want to be certain that you know the complete history of the car seat. Check to see if it is on the list of recalled products. (Information at http://www.carseat.org/Recalls/recall.shtml.) If it has ever been involved in anything more severe than a low-speed fender bender, don’t buy it.

SpongeBob Doesn’t Care About Your Los Angeles Child’s Health

December 30th, 2011 by dmccalla

SpongeBob Doesn't Care About Your Los Angeles Child's Health

National and local Los Angeles food advertisers can sabotage your Irvine child’s health. Food manufacturers, like most Los Angeles corporations, are motivated by profit, not by what’s best for Irvine kids.

Their tools are deceptive language, cartoon characters, celebrities, and false promises of popularity. Irvine parents can help youth better handle the constant media barrage by teaching them:

The components of a healthy diet
The implied messages and false promises of Irvine food ads
Nutritional balance and moderation
How to read and understand Los Angeles food labels
How excessive TV watching and internet viewing can affect health

If you encounter a local Irvine food ad that is deceptive, contact the Los Angeles Better Business Bureau. To complain about national ads, send a letter to the Children’s Advertising Review Unit, Council of Better Business Bureaus, 845 Third Ave, New York, NY 10022.

Nothing will change until Los Angeles families unite to fight deceptive advertising aimed at Irvine children. For more information on children’s nutrition in Los Angeles, call me today.
